“The sensation of fresh snow moving underneath my Gentemstick snowboard has brought me back to Hokkaido every winter for twenty years. Usually, I lose interest in a hobby very easily, but snowboarding lets me explore new landscapes, provide lasting memories and great friendships.

It was in Venice where I met Pascal who shares a similar passion for Hokkaido’s constant snow and the snow-surfing style of Gentemstick.

Through his photography, I hope to share our passion and inspiration with you.”

Pascal Shirley (Born 1980) received his MFA in Photography at the California College of the Arts in San Francisco. He resided in Venice for ten years and is now based out of West Adams. During the winter you will often find him on Japan’s northern Island of Hokkaido snowboarding or in Mammoth Lakes. He loves to go on road trips and seek out hot springs throughout the west with his pup, Sailor.

The titles is quoted from a Haiku poem by Kijo Murakami:
“Although there is a road, the child walks in the snow.”
