Opening reception : Thursday, August 18, 2011 at 6-9PM

In 2005, Shoji Morinaka came to LA for the first time and met a wood sculptor, Alma Allen. Shoji was a furniture craftsman at the time, but was inspired and decided to become a wood sculptor. Six years later, Shoji came back to California and has been creating new work in Joshua Tree.

Please join us for a joint opening reception to meet the artist to see the work Shoji has brought from his hometown Kagoshima as well his new creation in Joshua Tree.

*Please note that the work is sold off the shelves.

“Observing Alma’s work and life closely, I come to conclude that he may indeed be a visitor from outer space. While on hike, he’ll sense the wild animal in direction he’s not looking, and he’ll hear the rattle of the rattle snake while driving a 4WD. And above all, he has been making sculptures at ultrasound speed. I cannot help but think how happy those material must be having someone like Alma work on them. I cannot get over the fortune I have in working so close to such an amazing person.” -Quoted and translated from his blog (Japanese only).
