Shodo Interpretation

1. circle and square

2. single circle
A familiar symbol in Zen Buddhism, the form of the circle represents the state of Satori, which is enlightenment in Zen teaching.

3. circle, triangle and square
This piece is inspired by the painting of Gibon Sengai (1750 – 1837), ‘Circle-Triangle-Square’ and its contemporary style. It is said that these forms represent the universe.

4. 青松遮皎月・緑竹引清風
Blue pine cuts through the shining moon light and cool winds blow through the green bamboo. This is a representation of nature in its pure form.

5. 茶禅一味
The teachings of Zen and the Tea Ceremony share the same mind. this means to be mindful in the things you do. Sado, “the way of tea”, or the Tea Ceremony is done with a dedicated focus on even the smallest movements of the ritual. With concentrated practice one can become a master. So with the teachings of Zen concentrated practice and a mindfulness to even the smallest of things will make one a master of oneself.

6. 且座喫茶
Sit, rest for a while and have tea. In Zen Buddhism meditation is a key practice, so in one way this is a reminder to take time to be still.

7. 月在青天水在瓶
Moon in the blue sky, water in the bowl; everything is where it’s suppose to be. In its simplest form this means that as a human being be true to yourself and your (Buddha) nature.

8. 風外聴竹
Gentle winds rustle through bamboo leaves. It is the song of a quiet heart deeply aware of silence.

9. 茶味禅味味々一味

10. 室閑茶味清
Tea made in a silent room with a quiet mind is special. When doing something even as simple as making tea, be mindful of making the tea and let your mind be quiet.

11. 魚行似魚鳥飛如鳥
Fish swim in the water and the ocean is endless. Birds fly in the sky and the sky is endless. Water is perfect for the life of a fish and the sky for the life of a bird. This is saying that one should be what is required for the task at hand, if you are in water, be as a fish, if in the sky be as a bird.
