actually, our landlord was kind enough to let us move in just one day before the last Festival in order to take advantage of this opportunity. so our "tortoise" has been started since then!

well, again we remodeled our shop recently. actually we expanded our shop space to the back! now you can see more original furniture which taku designed such as a sofa, a low table, stools and lamps.
wood for the sofa and low table is called "zebra wood" plywood and the main fabric is gray 100% wool and brown fabric which you see at pillows is zebra wood pattern printed 100% cotton . the sofa includes this 16 reversible pillows. lamp shade is also made with the same zebra fabric. many many zebra woods here and there!! pretty soon these furniture will be updated on our website.
the entrance toward the new space is narrow as you see on the following photo, but please do not hesitate to get in! our mascot "Gamella" , which is actually a "tortoise", will welcome you!
this space works not only as a show room of furniture, but also as a gallery for an artist.
we are currently showing michiko yaoケs ウpaint-by numbersイ based work. her work makes viewers left to decide how to quantify & color living creature and ocean. all pieces are ink and acrylic on panel, and ranging in price from $250 to $500. yao hails from osaka, japan and she is a member of los angeles art association. if you like insects such as a praying mantis, a fly and a bee, please check them out! also her sea series are my favorite.
please visit her website: http://www.michikoyao.com

we recently received a cedar lamp from Japan, designed by toshiyuki tani and now you can see it even from outside!
this lamp is made by one of the most traditional bent wood technique which is still existed in akita, north part of japan. toshiyuki tani went up to north from tokyo to learn the bent wood technique directly from a craft man and makes the shade by himself one by one.

not only the beauty of the shape, but also you could enjoy the shadow and more scent of cedar when light is on.

how to make a coiled beech bowl:
prepare 1/25" thickness of 6.5-foot-long beech sheet first.
cut into 2/5" and 4/5" wide strips

coil it into a mold of base tightly.

then you push out by hand to make a solid body .

this is an environmentally friendly technique, that is, it does not waste of wood at all. Daily use available as a bowl for cereal, salad, yogurt, soup, and etc. Water resistant. Wash with neutral detergent. Not recommend to use a dishwasher nor microwave.
please check out our items: beech bowl

valentine's day is coming soon! well, in this time we will let you know about the way to celebrate valentine's day in japan.
it is only the women who give presents (mainly chocolates) to men. japanese women are usually too shy to express their love. (though it might not be true nowadays!) therefore, valentine's day was thought to be a great opportunity to let women express their feelings.

however, this is a custom that smart chocolate companies spread to increase their sales, and it has been very successful. it is said that chocolate companies in japan sell more than half of their annual sales during the week before valentine's day.
Men who get a chocolate are supposed to return gifts to women on a day called "white day" (march 14th) which is a japanese creation.

well, as a reality women give chocolates not only to their loved ones. they might be "giri-choko (obligation chocolate)", which is the chocolate given to men such as bosses, colleagues or male friends that women have no romantic interest in, just for friendship or gratitude. the concept of "giri" is very Japanese. it is a mutual obligation that the Japanese follow when dealing with other people. if someone does you a favor, then you feel obligated to do something for that person.
if you consider nice chocolates (not "giri-choco"!) for valentine's day, i will tell you where to go. that is my neighbor, "Jin Patisserie" on abbot kinney. She has such a beautiful collection of chocolates and cakes, as you might already know!
